Mohammed Ashar Mehdi
Vice-President Experience & Engagement (2026)
Was there anything in your personal or academic life which motivated you to join the SRC?
I have been an active member of the student community many times in the past. My leadership background includes being the Head Boy (School Captain). I have also been actively participating in debates and MUN (Model United Nations) also serving in competitions as the Director General for my school. These experiences led me to join the SRC at the University of Newcastle.
What is some advice for those thinking of nominating for next year's SRC?
DO NOT HESITATE. JUST APPLY.
Who is an inspirational leader to you, and why?
A leader who has my utmost respect and admiration is Imam Ali ibn Talib (as), who was patient, courageous and filled with wisdom, especially in times of disaster. He was a man who lived 1400 years ago in an age where change was drastically required.
Here are a couple of my personal favourite quotes of his:
“There is no good in silence over matters involving wisdom just as there is no good in speaking with ignorance.”
“The one who warns you of a danger is a valuable as the one who brings you good news.”
What do you hope to gain from this experience?
I hope to gain experience with people who are much senior, much learned and been through more difficulties than myself. I aim to gather many invaluable relationships and develop a network that will be memorable for my lifetime. I also invite all other possibilities and cases where a person learns the way they never expect, all those possibilities to occur that way I end up learning the most.
In your opinion, how important is the role of SRC and why?
The SRC role is extremely important at this university due to it’s high relevance. It is essential that there is student representation in any organisation to ensure that the student’s voices are heard. It bridges the gap between the students and the university authorities. Moreover, it is not everybody’s personality to speak up and lead, in those cases, it is extremely necessary that they have a person who represents the student to represent them and raise their concerns.
Software Engineering student and advocate for student voices. Mehdi strives for strengthening the relationship between students and university administration by prioritising socialisation and cultural exchange. SRC Vice-President positions collaborate with representative members to oversee extracurricular activities, support student-directed events and communicate student concerns.
