Queer Officer (2026)
Was there anything in your personal or academic life which motivated you to join the SRC?
My motivation to join the SRC stemmed from my personal passion for advocating for student rights and fostering a positive university environment. During my time at the University of Newcastle, I saw firsthand the challenges students face—whether it’s related to academic pressures, mental health, or access to resources. I wanted to be part of the solution and contribute to improving the student experience, ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard.
What is some advice for those thinking of nominating for next year's SRC?
I’d say go for it! Joining the SRC is an incredible opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of your fellow students. It’s a chance to develop leadership skills, meet like-minded individuals, and be involved in decision-making processes that impact the entire student body. It’s not always easy, but it’s a rewarding experience, and you’ll learn a lot about yourself and the university along the way.
Who is an inspirational leader to you, and why?
One of the most inspirational leaders to me is Paige Johnson. Paige is an amazing Trans figure in the Newcastle Queer community. She has contributed so much to UON and is a great reminder that queerness has a place everywhere.
What has been your most impactful and memorable experience on the SRC so far?
I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how student governments operate, develop my skills in leadership and advocacy, and create lasting change for students at the university. I also want to build connections with other student leaders and work on projects that can have a meaningful, long-term impact on the university community.
In your opinion, how important is the role of SRC and why?
The role of the SRC is extremely important at the University of Newcastle because it serves as a voice for students, ensuring their concerns are heard and addressed by the university administration. The SRC is a vital link between students and the broader institution, advocating for student needs in areas like academic policies, student welfare, inclusivity, and sustainability. Without an effective SRC, students may feel disconnected or overlooked, so it plays a crucial role in maintaining a positive and responsive campus environment.
Jamie has a passion for contributing to a positive university environment and amplifying students voices. The Queer Officer coordinates and Chairs the Queer Guild. The Queer Guild provides education, support, social activities and a place to advocate for issues impacting on its community. This a space for all students and members who identify as LGBTQIA+, identifying or questioning. This Guild represents the views, interests and needs of those who study/work at the University.
