Was there anything in your personal or academic life which motivated you to join the SRC?
In both my personal and academic life, I have always been driven by a desire to advocate for others and contribute positively to my community. Personally, I find great fulfilment in easing problems for others and defending people in difficult situations. This passion naturally extends into my academic life at university, where I am equally motivated to identify and address issues that affect my peers. Joining the SRC felt like a natural step because it aligns perfectly with what I enjoy and believe in. I wanted the opportunity to actively fix situations and be a part of the process of improvement within the university. Recognising concerns that arise in our academic environment, I was eager to communicate these issues, elevate the voices of fellow students, and ensure their feedback was heard.
What is some advice for those thinking of nominating for next year's SRC?
If you are considering nominating for next year’s SRC, I highly encourage you to go for it! It’s an incredible opportunity to channel your passions and represent your fellow university students. You’ll gain invaluable insights into how the university operates and develop essential governance skills. Being part of the SRC also means staying connected with the community and having a lot of fun along the way. Plus, you’ll get to work with UNSA, which is an enriching and enjoyable experience.
Who is an inspirational leader to you, and why?
An inspirational leader to me is my dad, who is a leader at his work and union. His influence comes from all the little things he does that often go unnoticed. His dedication extends into his everyday life by forming mutual connections with his team. He puts immense effort into every task, supports openly every individual who confides in him, and prepares meticulously for every meeting. His care for his teammates is evident in his commitment to their success and well-being. Hearing about the constant work he puts in to provide his workplace with the best representation and support shows me the true essence of leadership. It’s not just about holding a position of authority but about genuinely wanting to help others and working tirelessly to achieve that. This selfless dedication is what truly inspires me and shapes my understanding of leadership.
What has been your most impactful and memorable experience on the SRC so far?
Being a member of the SRC has been an incredible journey, filled with numerous impactful and memorable moments. Among these, one of the highlights has been judging the DJ Comp finals. This event was not only a night of exhilarating music and energy but also a testament to the vibrant and dynamic university community. Being involved in the SRC has allowed me to witness and contribute to the university’s dynamic culture. It has shown me the importance of balancing serious, impactful work with moments of joy and community engagement. Also, that these fun events are so important for the work that UNSA does in developing a positive campus experience. These experiences have not only been educational but also incredibly fun and rewarding.
In your opinion, how important is the role of SRC and why?
In my opinion, the role of the SRC at the University of Newcastle is incredibly significant. It serves as a vital platform for students to voice their concerns, protect their best interests, and champion for improvement. The SRC not only elevates student voices but also actively works to implement changes that enhance the overall student experience. This active representation is essential for creating a university experience that is inclusive, dynamic, and constantly improving.
The SRC covers a wide range of issues affecting students, from academic concerns to experience and welfare matters. It has the capability to advocate for the betterment of the student body, ensuring that their needs and interests are prioritized. By representing students and providing a structured channel for feedback, the SRC helps create a more responsive and supportive university environment. The SRC is a crucial resource for fostering a sense of community and engagement among students. It empowers them to participate in decision-making processes and ensures their perspectives are considered in university policies and initiatives.
