Was there anything in your personal or academic life which motivated you to join the SRC?
I’ve always had a caring nature and a genuine concern for others, which has been a strong motivator for me to join the SRC. From a young age, I was taught the importance of looking out for others and lending a helping hand when needed. During my time at university, I’ve seen firsthand how small changes can make a big difference in student life, and that sparked my desire to get involved. I wanted to be in a position where I could advocate for my peers, represent their concerns, and collaborate with the university to create a better environment for everyone. Being part of the SRC allows me to make a positive impact and ensure that student voices are heard.
What is some advice for those thinking of nominating for next year's SRC?
The SRC is an incredible opportunity to make a real difference on campus and represent your peers in a meaningful way. My advice is to be passionate about making a positive impact. Your job is to be the voice of the student body, so focus on understanding their concerns,
advocating for their needs, and always striving to make campus life better for everyone.
Who is an inspirational leader to you, and why?
Hank Green is a leader I find truly inspiring, not only because of his work in science communication but also because of his impactful charity work. Through his projects like Project for Awesome, Hank has helped raise millions of dollars for charity, supporting causes like mental health, education, and environmental conservation. What I admire most is his ability to inspire others to get involved and give back. Hank uses his platforms, such as YouTube and social media, to raise awareness and encourage his followers to take action. He combines creativity, education, and philanthropy in a way that’s both engaging and impactful. He teaches us that leadership isn’t just about achieving success but also about lifting others up and making a positive difference in the world.
What do you hope to gain from this experience?
I hope to gain a deeper understanding of how decisions are made at the institutional level and how student concerns can be addressed more effectively. I’m also excited to build meaningful connections with faculty, staff, and other students who share the same passion for making a positive impact. Being part of the SRC will give me valuable insight into the inner workings of the university and provide an opportunity to collaborate with a diverse group of individuals focused on improving student life.
In your opinion, how important is the role of SRC and why?
The role of the SRC is incredibly important because it serves as a bridge between students and the university administration. It provides students with a platform to voice their concerns, advocate for their needs, and ensure that their perspectives are considered in decision-making processes. The SRC is also vital for fostering a sense of community and support among students, promoting student welfare, and ensuring that campus life is not only educational but also inclusive and enjoyable.

Through collaboration and understanding the concerns of the student body, Benjamin hopes to represent his peers in a meaningful way. The Newcastle Campuses Convenor chairs the Newcastle Advisory Group, focusing on representing students interests and fostering positive out-of-class experiences for those whose primary campus falls within this catchment.
